Maasai Mara

Maasai Mara, Kenya
Maasai Mara

The Mara (as it is affectionately known) covers 1510 km2 (583 mi2) and is widely considered to be Africa’s greatest reserve. The backdrop of the Siria escarpment in the west overlooks sweeping savannas, riverine woodlands, and forests on a deceptively flat landscape that extends eastwards towards the Sekenani Hills and northwards towards the Aitong Hills. The Mara is in essence the northern extension of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem and plays host to one of nature's greatest phenomenons, the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Because of the quality of wildlife viewing, the Mara has for generations been the setting for hundreds of wildlife documentaries, including Disney's African Cats, and the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries and Planet Earth. It is a wildlife photographer's paradise and every year visitors come to capture the spectacular wildlife. The reserve and its conservancies contain some of the highest densities of predators in Africa and this only increases as nomads and vagrants follow the huge herds back and forth through this ecosystem during the seasonal wildebeest migration.

&Beyond Kichwa Tembo

Maasai Mara, Kenya
&Beyond Kichwa Tembo

Steeped in the aura of classical safari, andBeyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp boasts 12 classic tents, 20 superior tents and eight superior view tents. While all the tents look out onto the open grasslands or the shady forest surrounding the Sabaringo River, the superior view tents boast exceptionally beautiful, uninterrupted views of the Masai Mara.

The superior tents feature beautiful Maasai-inspired interiors that showcase a simple and contemporary use of local materials. Oversized beds are perfectly positioned to make the most of the views, while stained cypress wood furniture combine with tribal decorative elements. The generously sized swimming pool is set among the trees and surrounded by lush lawns and spectacular view

Experiences & Activities

Set out in an open 4x4 safari vehicle in the company of your guide in search of the incredible wildlife in the Masai Mara. &Beyond’s professionally trained guides will ask you about your favorite wildlife and will do their best to ensure that your preferences are met, whether it is tracking a particular species or spending more time enjoying each sighting, getting to know the habits of the animals. They will also tell you about the vegetation of the region and will explain the behavior of the animals that you come across. In some cases, the guides will be able to identify individual animals and let you know about their history and habits. If the Great Migration is passing through the area, your guide will attempt to catch up with it and spend some time in the midst of the massed herds.

Accommodation

Recently rebuilt, the superior tents are separated into eight superior view tents and 20 superior tents. The larger and more spacious superior tents feature beautiful Maasai-inspired interiors that showcase a simple and contemporary use of local materials. Oversized beds are perfectly positioned to make the most of the views, while stained cypress wood furniture combine with tribal decorative elements. Indulge in beautifully roomy ensuite bathrooms and private verandas with comfortable day beds. The 20 superior tents offer either slightly interrupted views of the Masai Mara, glimpses of the Masai Mara through the shade of the forest (excellent for bird lovers) or picturesque scenes of a nearby escarpment.

Diani Beach

Diani Beach, Kenya
Diani Beach

Many consider Diani Beach, and its extension Galu Beach, to be not only one of the most beautiful beaches in Africa, but likely in the world. It is about 17 km (10 mi) long, from the Kongo River in the north to Galu Beach in the south (the southern point of reference is an old Baobab tree). The coast's white sand and warm clear turquoise waters are protected by the continuous coral reef, making for very good fishing and snorkeling. Diani is a popular spot for kitesurfing and sky diving and is not far from the Shimba Hills National Reserve, which looks out over the Indian Ocean.

There are multiple shopping centers strewn along the main road, above which the local Colobus Trust has erected a number of “monkey bridges” to protect the local black and white colobus monkeys. The 16th century Kongo Mosque is the last remaining ancient Swahili structure in Diani, located at the northern tip of Diani Beach, where the Kongo River flows into the ocean. To the south of Diani, before the Tanzania border, are the famous slave caves of Shimoni and a world famous fishing outpost that serves as the starting point for day trips on sailing dhows to Kisite Island. With a population of over 100,000 inhabitants, the Diani/Ukunda urban area is one of the largest at the Kenyan coast and forms part of the Mombasa metropolitan region. A small airstrip, Ukunda Airport, is located between the beach area and the Mombasa-Lunga Lunga road.
