Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town

One of the planet’s most breathtaking cities, Cape Town, by population, is the second largest settlement in South Africa. Nature surrounds this multicultural city, which nuzzles between a rugged range of mountains and the sea. For a spectacular overview, hike to the peak of flat-topped Table Mountain, or glide up on the cableway.

The hour-long hike up Lion’s Head also provides panoramic city vistas. On Table Mountain’s eastern slopes, the magnificent Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens lie within a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strolling along the waterfront boardwalk, visitors might see whales spouting. Penguins waddle along the golden beaches in False Bay, while south of the city, Cape Point is home to abundant wildlife and diverse botanical waterfront boardwalk wonders.

One of Cape Town’s top attractions is the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Reminiscent of Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, visitors come here to shop, dine, and enjoy the many entertainment venues, including the Two Oceans Aquarium. Camps Bay, rimmed by beautiful boulder-flanked beaches, offers chic shops and cafes. At sunset, nature lovers stake a spot along spectacular Chapman’s Peak Drive in a dusk ritual known as “sundowners” to watch the sun sink slowly into the sea.

Labotessa Luxury Boutique Hotel

Cape Town, South Africa
Labotessa Luxury Boutique Hotel

Cape Town boutique hotel Labotessa combines national history, indulgent design and continental culture – a medley that perfectly captures the city’s cosmopolitan soul. Built in the 17th century, the building is the second oldest in South Africa, overlooking historic Church Square in the heart of the CBD.

Don’t be fooled, however: you won’t detect the slightest hint of stuffiness as you step through the stone entrance and into the perfumed lobby, which doubles as a Diptyque boutique. Each of the seven suites is serviced by a lift that takes you right to the door, and feature high ceilings, parquet floors and large windows overlooking historic buildings and Lion’s Head mountain.

Downstairs, guests and locals hold court at Labotessa Café, a brunch favourite that spills onto a greenery-filled terrace reminiscent of the genteel Gallic courtyards.

Accommodation

Signature Suites

High ceilings and generous proportions set the stage for the European-inspired but globally-aesthetic Signature Suites. The rich palette of colours is both modern and timeless, inviting sophisticated elegance. Each one of our six Signature Suites with direct elevator access has panoramic views over Lion’s Head, the Slave Lodge, the Groote Kerk, the Company Gardens, and Church Square.

De Hoop Nature Reserve

De Hoop Nature Reserve, South Africa
De Hoop Nature Reserve

the Hikers, cyclists, birdwatchers and whale watchers favour unaffected De Hoop Nature Reserve, situated a mere three-hour drive eastwards of Cape Town. Here, the Potberg Mountains and the Indian Ocean flank 34, 000 hectares of fynbos, beaches, dunes and vlei wetlands. De Hoop is the halfway point between Cape Town and Knysna and remains an uncommercial hidden gem for nature lovers. De Hoop Nature Reserve offers the best land-based whale watching area in Africa during the winter months (June – August). Home to migrating Southern Right Whales visiting the shores of De Hoop from Antarctica to mate and calve, it offers sanctuary to Bryde’s and the rare humpback whale plus pods of dolphins, all regular visitors to the Marine Protected Area.

The reserve is also part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of six Floral Kingdoms of the World, and occupies only 0.04% of the planet’s landmass. Situated at the southern tip of Africa this tiny floral kingdom is a World Heritage Site and the only one to be fully contained within a single country. it is a beautiful year-round destination with much to offer nature lovers. Winter (June – August) is best for land-based whale watching, hiking, sand boarding and mountain biking. During these months the Whale Trail and De Hoop Camino offer life-changing experiences on the reserve. During Summer, Spring and Autumn (September through May ) explore  rock pools, take nature walks and picnics.
