One of the most pristine areas on Earth, the Namib Desert is a world of vast spaces, endless horizons, dramatic landscapes and jagged mountain heights. The NamibRand Nature Reserve, Southern Africa’s largest private nature reserve, consists of 215 000 hectares (530 300 acres) of unspoiled desert wilderness. The spectacular dunes at Sossusvlei, arrayed in magnificent hues of orange, buttermilk, pumpkin and sienna, are part of the Namib Sand Seawhich is the biggest dune field south of the Sahara. Towering over a vast, dry pan, these towering dunes, shaped by sands millions of years old, are among the highest in the world. Known as the Living Desert, the dunes of the Namib abound with specially adapted wildlife and over 114bird species. A landscape of seemingly endless spaces, profound tranquillity, and extraordinary light, make this one of Africa’s most compelling natural regions.
